Sometimes the feelings are huge, and the words just aren’t there yet.

That’s true for kids, teens, and honestly, adults too. You or your child might want to talk, but instead it comes out as tears, frustration, silence, or “I don’t know.”

Art and play give those feelings a safe place to land. No pressure. Just a natural way to let it out, make sense of it, and start building real coping skills.

At four Child and Family Art Therapy Centers around Philadelphia, PA, we use playful, creative techniques to help your family grow, thrive, and feel confident.

Child and Family Art Therapy Center

Meet Mike, our founder!

Parents call him Mike. Kids fondly call him Mr. Mike and he’s proudly kept that title for 30 years.

As a board-certified art therapist and licensed professional counselor, plus an author and frequent podcast guest, Mike shares practical, hopeful tools for families. His favorite place is still the therapy room, helping people feel less stuck and more confident at home. And while Mike is only one guy, he has built a team to speak to these truths through their own expertise and experience.

If you asked Mr. Mike what he’d give his whole heart to, it’s this: delivering love to a world that needs it, making this the best place for a child or teen to get therapy, and the easiest place for parents to feel supported and trained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your kid has questions. You have questions.
We love questions!

It’s not always easy to know when a child needs therapy, but there are some helpful signs to guide you. Often, kids show they’re struggling through behaviour: big emotions, persistent worries, intense reactions, or changes that feel out of character or hard to manage. Some children and teens struggle with friendships, confidence, or social situations, while others withdraw or seem overwhelmed by everyday demands. When these patterns stick around or start getting in the way of daily life, therapy can help.

At our practice, children learn coping skills to feel and function better, and caregivers learn practical, individualized ways to support them at home. You don’t need a formal diagnosis. Trusting your instincts as a caregiver is more than enough to take the next step. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to talk it through with you.

Individual therapy sessions range from $200–$220, and group sessions are $90, with a limited number of sliding-scale openings available through our BetterWorld Accessible Therapy Program. Payment is due at each session, and we accept credit/debit cards and secure online payments.

We are an out-of-network (OON) practice, but many insurance plans reimburse 50–90% of session costs. For example, a $200 session may ultimately cost $20–$100 after reimbursement. We provide all required documentation to make the process as simple as possible. Our goal is to keep therapy in Haverford, PA, Paoli, PA, Plymouth Meeting, and Center City, Philadelphia accessible and low-stress, so your energy can stay focused on growth and connection.

The easiest way to get started is by completing our secure, HIPAA-compliant appointment request form. It takes about 2–5 minutes and helps us understand your child’s needs and your preferred schedule and Philadelphia-area location.
Once we receive your form, we respond within 12–24 hours to connect you with an available therapist and answer questions. We also offer a complimentary 30-minute consultation call to help you feel confident about next steps.

If you’d rather speak with someone first, you can reach our Client Relations Coordinator, Katy O’Gara, at connect@childandfamilyarttherapycenter.com or (610) 649-1080 x1.

For your convenience, here are the direct links to our forms:

We’re here to make starting therapy as simple, supportive, and welcoming as possible, so you can focus on helping your child grow, thrive, and feel confident.

For most kids, the idea of “therapy” sounds intimidating. Talking about big feelings with a stranger? No thanks. That’s where art and play come in.

Art and play are a child’s natural language. In a safe, supportive relationship with a trained therapist in Philadelphia, children use drawing, building, pretend play, or sandtray work to express what’s hard to say out loud. Through symbols and creativity, kids release stuck emotions, practice coping skills, build problem-solving abilities, and strengthen self-control, often while having fun.

No artistic skill is required. Art therapy isn’t about making something “good,” it’s about communication, connection, and growth. This approach meets children exactly where they are and helps them feel understood, capable, and supported.

Many children benefit from social skills groups; not just those with formal diagnoses. Kids with Autism, ADHD, or social communication challenges often find these groups especially helpful, but children without diagnoses can benefit too. Some need support with friendships, conversation, confidence, or navigating group dynamics.

The pandemic reminded us that social skills are for everyone. Our Philadelphia programs focus on building confidence, connection, and real-world social success in a supportive peer environment. We’ll help you find the group that’s the best fit for your child.

Yes. While “Child” is in our name, we’ve always supported adults of all ages, including college students and young adults. Art therapy for adults in Philadelphia, PA can focus on relaxation, emotional processing, or deeper reflection, sometimes alongside verbal therapy, sometimes through imagery alone.

No art experience is needed. The creative process helps make complex or overwhelming experiences more manageable and meaningful. Many adults find that art offers fresh insight, clarity, and a gentler way to explore life transitions, relationships, and personal growth. With the guidance of a skilled art therapist, you can better understand where you are, and imagine where you want to go next.
