The Child and Family Art Therapy Center proudly presents “The Art of Friendship”, an award-winning program that offers a range of groups that help young people develop social skills, competence, and awareness. In the context of both structured and un-structured activities, existing strengths are reinforced, new social skills are taught, and self-esteem is built. Middle and high-school age children receive direct instruction in Theory-of-Mind, self regulation, conversation, “hanging-out”, leisure, group work, and life-skills. In each weekly session, conversation practice, team-building and/or leisure activities reinforce the day’s lesson. The “I-LAUGH”© (Michelle Garcia-Winner) model of social thinking is integrated with behavioral training. When groups develop necessary baseline skills, they may occasionally meet in the community (bowling, coffee shops, pizza restaurants, etc) for real-world social practice.
Our therapists have specialized training in neuro-developmental disorders, adolescent emotional and social development, and group therapy. Therapists may provide structured social-practice activities for youth who are more impulsive or lacking awareness of the impact of their behavior on others. For high-functioning, independent-minded teens who can organize activities and participate in conversation practice, the groups may be more relaxed and participant-led. We value this vital period of transformation in every child’s life, and support the typical developmental needs of teens, including the development of autonomy, independence, and self-identity. Whenever possible, our therapists strive to provide teenage groups the opportunity to make the group their own by encouraging members to self-select meaningful, fun recreational activities.
